It begins, the cold nights and fresh mornings, brings a warm, almost hot, day. While i was out busily building our new chicken tractor, i was listening to the song of the house martin. It was perched up on the electricity wire that joined to my house. I stopped in wonder from hammering, to admire the beautiful song it was gifting me. At that moment i realised the beauty and powerful meaning of that moment. I looked across at the field to the new mother goats, to see them watching their young, jumping and frolicking in the grass. The wind turbines up on the mountain top were slowly spinning, and the fresh clouds were piercing through, the sound was quiet, the air was still, what a wonderful time to be alive. I finished the frame of the chicken tractor. It measured in at 3x3 meters, and 1/2 a meter tall. I then went round my garden fence to find any existing chicken wire that wasn't being of any use anymore, and pulled ...
Dearest friends, hasn't it been hot this summer. It certainly has been a weird summer in terms of heat and long lasting sun. I can feel a slight change now though, especially as the 100kilo of potatoes is almost out of the ground, and the mountain of tomatoes are yet to be processed. Rain is due tomorrow, 14th september, we'l see if the weather company get it right. Today I harvested the black beans and the flageolet beans. I have also processed some of the tomatoes in salt water waiting to ferment. Fermenting is my new thing. I have been making fermented tomato salsa, fermented cabbage/sauerkraut, fermented whole tomatoes, anything I can get in a jar with salt I will try to ferment. Its so quick and easy, rather than cooking up the tomatoes, and then canning them. In my house canning requires lighting the fire oven all day, and in this heat, its like a sauna all through my home. Which i dont mind at all, but the other members of my family cant ...
It has been a busy few days here on the farm. I have been in the garden, planting out the beans, the tall ones and the bush beans. I have been up to the woodland area today to collect ferns of those that i use as mulch and carefully detach each leaf cluster and place it at the base of each plant. Which, as you can guess took some time. I have been planting out more tomatoes. When some of them that were small were put in too early, those ones have withered in the heat of the day and i have replanted out bigger and more stronger ones. Today my daughter and i cleared the woods and took some of the small sproutlings that died in the fire back 2 years ago, that hadn't been cleared. So i took it upon myself to do that today. Using the thin but tall tree sprouts as bean poles i tried to hold up the tomatoes once they are fully grown. The year i have to patches, each will have a different design to hold the plant from snapping from too much weight from the fruit. One patch ...
